How to color with a one year old

How to color with a one year old

As part of our year of mommy/son dates, I thought it would be fun to bust out the crayons and see what happens. I knew he probably wouldn’t “get it” yet, and that I’d likely end up flossing crayon out of his cute little baby teeth, but we had fun anyway.

If you want to have some incredibly unproductive fun with your baby too, here are a few tips:

Lock up your animals

Shih tzuIt’s for their own safety. They’ll thank you later when they don’t have crayons lodged in their nostrils.

Hand out two crayons at a time

As the crayons begin to meet their untimely demise, just keep handing out more. Bonus points if you stop to appreciate how cute their chubby little hands look while holding crayons.

Expect crayon-to-mouth action

It’s okay, because the brains over at Crayola have made these suckers non-toxic. So technically you could call this play time and lunch if you wanted to.

Don’t expect a masterpiece

Baby coloring

Seriously, congratulate yourself with a celebratory cookie and a glass of wine if you got them to color on the paper at all.

Have fun, smile, and laugh

Take it easy mommy. Your little bundle of energy is probably going to flip out over the fun new chew toys you’ve handed him. Go with it. Take some pictures. And thank God for Magic Erasers.

Got any other tips? I’d love to hear them!

After a few unfortunate incidents involving crayons to walls, we don’t let Avery color unless she is firmly strapped in her highchair.

HA!! Everything goes straight to the mouth at that age. His chubby little fingers are so sweet!

I’m a big fan of artwork done in the tub! We have tub crayons, and markers, and paint galore! Plus sometimes there’s a sponge and the kids will clean it all up too!

I have a love hate relationship with crayon time. I was that nerd that kept all of her crayons perfectly sharpened with that nifty sharpener on the back of the big pack and if the crayon lost all it’s paper, it was off to the trash. Clearly Clay doesn’t share the love. I got him the big triangle crayons that are made for toddlers and they do seem to “work” better than the regular ones. By “work” I mean they don’t snap as easily.

That is absolutely adorable!! It looks like the two of you had a lot of fun together! Great tips too, certainly a good idea to limit how many crayons are given at a time. I learned that very quickly with my younger clients at work.

Those are some adorable photos! As a professional creative, I totally admire that you’re encouraging your little one to be creative at just one. You may not get a masterpiece today, but coloring inside the lines or within the bounds of the paper is so overrated anyhow lol And believe it or not, just holding the crayon and trying to use it however he pleases helps build eye hand coordination and sensory skills ๐Ÿ™‚ If you’re not sure what to do with all those chewed up broken crayons, melting them down and making your own marble crayons is a great use for them! When our crayon bucket was full of more broken crayons that solid ones, that’s what my mom would do!

I remember those days with my son, now he’s five and loves markers. While they don’t go in his mouth he waves his arms around and forgets that markers leave marks on walls. Your little one is adorable and I love that you “locked up your animal.” Very cute!

Aww so sweet! I love your 2 crayons at a time rule. It is fun watching them learn coloring skills. My youngest is 2 now, but she also enjoys putting crayons in her mouth and would benefit from the 2 crayon rule ๐Ÿ™‚
