Homeschool Kindergarten Day 8: An Introduction to Harry Potter

It has been my plan to take my time reading the Harry Potter books to Wyatt and watching the corresponding movie after finishing each one. So imagine my great shock and disappointment when my mother tells me she let him start watching the first movie today. How dare you, Mother. (she’s going to read this and feel so guilty)

I totally admit to freaking out, momentarily. If I make a plan my brain doesn’t know what to do if the plan goes off course. This might be one of the main reasons I decided not to have a very structured homeschool plan for us this first year. I didn’t want to be frustrated and end up derailed by things not moving along exactly according to plan. Based off my reaction tonight, I think it was probably a wise choice!

Once I got my reason back, I decided this wasn’t a huge deal. I wanted to get the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone anyway, and it was in stock at Target, so my mom and I headed over there to pick it up. You guys, I die. It’s so pretty.

Just look at how happy he is about it. Heart. Melted. I hope he loves every bit of it.

On a whim my mom also decided we needed this Marauder’s Map Guide to Hogwarts, complete with a wand that lights up and reveals hidden messages on the map. He’s been shining it everywhere. If there were any hidden messages up my nostrils, I assure you he found them, as the thing was pointed up there at least 7 times.

There was not a lot of official school done today because of my Friday work schedule, so I decided reading a chapter from Harry Potter would be the “lesson” of the day. We snuggled up in my bed and I read to him, feeling like I was reading it for the first time all over again. I could have cried. By the time I got to the last page of the chapter, Wyatt was barely awake, so I finished it off while he drifted to sleep. I mean, could this have been a more perfect parenting moment? I appreciate every moment with my boy, but this one I was truly cherish.

Have you had any really special moments with your kids lately? I’d love to hear about them!

P.S. I’d love for you to checkout my homeschool kindergarten board on Pinterest, as well as my Amazon favorites where I have curated lists of things we genuinely use and love.
