Homeschool Kindergarten Day 15: Reading, Writing, and Scooby-Doo

I have most of the homeschool stuff that we’re not actively using stored away in a couple of big dresser drawers, which works out well enough. I keep it fairly organized by type of supply and age level. But you know, things still get mixed up in there from time to time and I go through and tidy it up. Well, I was doing just that this past weekend and realized we had a set of Bob Books for pre-readers that I had completely forgotten about. Finding that gave me feelings akin to stumbling upon a long-lost 10 dollar bill in the pocket of some jeans you haven’t worn in a year. More proof that I most definitely live for the little things.

I put the set of books up with the rest of our current homeschool supplies thinking we’d get to them after we get back from vacation, but Wyatt spotted them and was super interested so we dived right in. I don’t know what the other sets are like, but the pre-readers are very basic (not a bad thing) and Wyatt loved them. I think the rest of the sets might be in our future.

After some lunch we finally got around to using the A-Z handwriting worksheets I printed and laminated last week.

He enjoyed them at first but a few letters in I think the repetition got old and I could tell he was just done. Not a big deal. He did really great on the first few and we’ll definitely use these again to work on handwriting skills. He was actually so proud of his A’s we had to take a picture.

The rest of the day was pretty relaxed. He asked to read another chapter from the illustrated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone book, so I obviously stopped everything so we could do that. Because, you know, Harry Potter.

Then later in the evening we did a page out of the Mead Preschool Workbook but he wasn’t super into it, so we ended up pushing that to side and playing with Scooby-Do toys instead. I was tasked with playing the role of Daphne, and I think I did a fine job. I convinced Fred to let me drive the Mystery Machine, then accidentally drove it over a cliff (so much for dispelling that women-can’t-drive stereotype). We were attacked by the Lake Monster and I was nearly eaten by a T-rex, but managed to survive.

We finished off the night with a game of Jumanji, then it was time for bed. But not before we took a picture of our one-eyed homeschool mascot, Dewey.

Homeschool Kindergarten Day 14: A Pirate’s Life For Me

Today Wyatt and I went on an adventure to one of our favorites places: DOLLAR TREE. We spent a good chunk of time in the school section and walked away with workbooks and flashcards and posters galore. I think I just need a few more visits and I’ll own practically the whole section. I feel okay about it.

As fun as the school section was, what Wyatt was really interested in was the Halloween stuff. He’s a costume kind of kid and I can’t ever seem to deny him stuff for his dress-up collection. Today he zeroed in on some pirate gear, and there was no way we were going home without it. He wore it around and called himself One-Eyed Willie (where are my Goonies fans at?) for a significant portion of the day.

I’m not sure if he knows that’s actually a knight’s breastplate, but I’m just playing along for now. Anyway, I think it looks fabulous with the doubloon necklace.

Later in the afternoon we cracked open a new workbook I picked up on sale over the weekend: Bob Books Developing Readers Workbook. It’s meant to accompany the Bob Books sets 3-5, but it seems to stand alone as well so we’re going to go forward with it. So far sight word flashcards haven’t been a huge hit, but the start of this workbook incorporates the words in a fun way that he really got into. I think we’ll go slowly through this one since it’s a smidge advanced, plus I want to take extra time to work on handwriting as well. I printed and laminated these A-Z Handwriting Worksheets that we’ll hopefully start using next week.

Since I worked again in the afternoon that pretty much summed up our homeschool day, and we were both okay with that. We’re ready for the weekend, baby.

Do you have any big weekend plans? I think you’ll find us mostly eating candy and watching movies and probably telling more knock-knock jokes.

Homeschool Kindergarten Day 13: Farm Life

Once a month or so Wyatt gets to take a special visit to our friends’ little farm. It’s such a fun experience for him. He even has his own chicken there named Boo-Boo.

Wyatt has declared himself their leader. The chickens don’t seem to mind.

He gets to do all the cool stuff there, like collect eggs.

“Harvest” crops.

And run the baler.

Homeschool Kindergarten Day 13: Farm Life - Everyday Trish

Just kidding. They don’t get to run the baler until they’re six.

Later in the day, after recuperating from all that farm excitement, we sat down to read “Eating the Alphabet” by Lois Ehlert (another book on loan from Jenn). He had a lot of fun identifying all the fruits and vegetables (you know, all the ones he won’t eat) and even recognized a few from his trip to the farm.

The rest of the day was pretty relaxed with lots of play and a round of Jumanji thrown in for extra fun. Not too bad for a day in the life of a kindergartner, right?

What are your favorite homeschool field trip spots? I’m always looking for new ideas!

Homeschool Kindergarten Day 12: The “Nature” Walk

September 11, 2018 by Tricia Adams Leave a Comment

Today started out with a very, and I mean very, impromptu lesson about hurricanes. I assure you I was in no way prepared to explain what a hurricane was. My explanation started to come out something like this “You know a hurricane is a storm in the ocean and the air pushes up and the other air pushes down and then it spins and there are clouds and wind and oh my God I’m not a meteorologist let’s go find something on Youtube before you realize I have no idea what I’m talking about.” So we found a kid-friendly (also dumb parent friendly) explanation about exactly how hurricanes form and he seemed satisfied with that.

I also put “learn more about weather and stuff” on my to-do list. Don’t judge me.

A little later in the day we went on a “nature” walk around our neighborhood, where he thankfully did not ask anymore weather-related questions. We live in a subdivision, so we weren’t exactly immersed in nature, but we still found a lot of it on our walk. The biggest hit was a pile of acorns that we carried home. Correction. That I carried home. Because he was so tired. He was also irritated with me toward the end of our walk because I didn’t bring anything for him to lie down on when he got tired. I kid you not. He said that to me. I’m so sorry that I didn’t think to bring a cot with us on a walk around the neighborhood. I really didn’t think I was going to be the cause of all his problems until he was a teenager. I was wrong.

Homeschool Kindergarten Day 12 - Everyday Trish

I swear those fingernails were clean earlier today

Our walk was actually really fun, despite my lapse in judgement in not bringing somewhere for him to nap. We told lots of knock-knock jokes and made up rhymes and picked dandelions out of people’s yards. Oh and we crunched lots of leaves and jumped over just about every stick in the road. We also tried to outrun our shadows, but they were too fast. We were both a little relieved to finally make it up the big hill to our house though. He got his tendency to overheat from me. Sorry, kid.

Homeschool Kindergarten Day 12 - Everyday Trish

We relaxed a little bit after the walk, and I made my final decision on whether I was going to introduce anything about 9/11 today. I had been looking for some kind of resource that felt appropriate for him, but was coming up empty-handed. I really did not want to show him actual pictures or footage from that day, since he tends toward the more sensitive side of things and it just didn’t feel right for him at this time. I was beginning to lean toward not bringing it up today, but then I found this video and it was exactly what I wanted. It’s short, to the point, and is explained in very kid-friendly terms. It is Christian-based, so if you aren’t interested in that aspect you can turn the video off after the 1:50 mark.

9-11 video from Noël Hale on Vimeo.

I tried not to, but I cried while we watched the video together. I cried for what happened that day and I cried for my kid, who seems so wonderfully innocent, having to learn about the evil mankind can do. I wish I could just protect him from that forever, but since I can’t, I’ll opt to ease him into it the best I can. I think I’m doing an okay job so far.

I needed to pull myself together a little bit after that so I asked Wyatt if he wanted to turn something happy on Netflix. He excitedly picked a movie I’d never heard of before, called Pettersson and Findus 2. It looked harmless enough so we turned it on and I went about my business, not paying too much attention to it. Until all of a sudden I realized, this movie is in German. And my kid is just sitting on the bed watching it like he has any idea what they’re saying. So I said, Wyatt, why the heck are you watching a movie in German? His response was “Because it’s funny and I like it.” I didn’t even know how to argue with that. So I didn’t. I just accepted that my child now like ridiculous German children’s movies. All my worries about stealing some of his innocence today faded away. Thanks, Germany.

The rest of the day was pretty uneventful. We went to soccer, had dinner, and did some work out of the What Your Preschooler Needs to Know activity book. And talked about how sails on a boat work. Because, of course we did.

Has your kid ever been into something more weird than German kids movies? Let me know so we can be weird-kid moms together!

Homeschool Kindergarten Day 11: Bathtub Reading and Counting to 20

When I announced that we were homeschooling I was kind of nervous thinking about what kinds of responses I was going to get. Were people going be supportive or would they tell me I was stupid and on the express train toward ruining in my own child? I waited for it. For just one person to say this was a mistake. But it hasn’t come yet. If anyone DOES think I’m going to ruin my kid, they haven’t said anything. The response was overwhelmingly positive and supportive, and I am so thankful for that. I know that at some point during this homeschool journey chances are high someone, somewhere will have something negative to say, but for now I’ll just enjoy all the positive vibes I can get.

My friend Jenn, who is a teacher, was over this weekend and left us with some books from her massive personal library and today we busted out “Teeth, Tails, & Tentacles: An Animal Counting Book” by Christopher Wormell.  We read it once during Basement Time, and then again at bath time. Let me tell you, if you have a child that won’t sit still, bath time is the perfect time to capture their attention. There’s nowhere for them to go unless they want to be naked and cold.

Homeschool Kindergarten Day 11 - Everyday Trish

We’ve been having a little trouble counting all the way to 20, but he did really well engaging and counting along with this book. He even made it all the way through 20 one time without missing a number. I was so proud and he was so happy. We’ll definitely be getting this one out again to practice some more. There are even little snippets in the back of the book that teach you about all the animals, and he found that super interesting. Somehow we ended up on a whole tangent about marsupials. Oh, and then we had to pretend to be bears climbing trees. And we hissed like snakes and “bit” each other with our fangs. It was basically the best part of my day.

And here we are at the end, and I’m feeling those twinges of guilt for not doing enough with the day. Even though it was a tough one with allergies and headaches and extra non-homeschool work. I’m trying to shake those thoughts off though. It was still a good day with progress and triumphs. He counted to 20! He cleaned his butt! He ate something other than candy! I’ll take whatever wins I can get.

Did you have any triumphs today? Big or small, I’d love to hear them!
